Groundbreaking Held for North Kansas City Development Project
North Kansas City held a groundbreaking Dec. 7 for the new Meierotto Jewelers' headquarters. Attending were members of the Meierotto family and officials with McCown Gordon Construction and Davidson Architecture & Engineering.
The event was also the first element in North Kansas City’s 62-acre redevelopment. Just east of I-29/I-35, the project is converting a former industrial stretch of Armour Road into a mixed-use development likely to have regional impact.
The new Meierotto headquarters will be a two-story, 37,000-square-foot building that will also include a retail store and is expected to open in the fall. Meierotto’s will employ 45 people at the new site. Meierotto's will be one of two North Kansas City jewelry headquarters when Berkshire Hathaway's Helzberg Diamonds completes its planned move from 4311 NE Vivion Road in Kansas City.
North Kansas City began acquiring the 62-acre site over 15 years ago. Previous businesses included Payless Cashways, the ADM flour mill and Habco Inc.
Other plans for the site include a hotel, a conference center, entertainment areas, restaurants, an apartment project, a grocery story and other retail locations.
