Trade Group Continues Efforts to Promote Imports, Exports

The Northland International Trade Assistance Group discussed ways to foster international trade in this area at their Sept. 1 meeting.
The Northland International Trade Assistance Group sponsored by the Clay County Economic Development Council met Sept. 1 to continue efforts begun two years ago.

The group gathered at the Hilltop at Briarcliff to discuss ways to promote international business in the region. Among the topics was the recently launched Web site, www.northlandglobal.com which offers how-to and important contact information for businesses considering importing or exporting.

Several said that expanding into international markets is an increasingly important opportunity for growth by area companies, but issues such as regulation complexity and a widespread “fear factor” often stand in the way.

“We need to expand our markets,” noted State Representative Jerry Nolte. “It’s a way we can expand our economy.”

Regina Heise, Director of the US Commercial Service in Kansas City for the U.S. Department of Commerce, said companies most of all need commitment to follow through. Mark Wine of the Missouri Department of Economic Development noted that help is available, at both federal and Missouri offices, including contacts with Missouri’s representatives in foreign locations.

Attorney George Blackwood praised the efforts and said the only real obstacle is parochialism. Steve Brainard, chair of the group, said pursuing the opportunities was important for the entire region because of job growth and other advantages.

“As long as it promotes the opportunity for success, that’s all we want,” Brainard concluded.
