At least 100 EDC volunteers are needed Saturday, May 1 for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace Bed Build Day.
Organized by the EDC, the event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Liberty Square. The goal of the event is to construct 50 beds for those who do not have one.
Across the U.S., too many boys and girls go without a bed – or even a pillow – to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets and even floors. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need.
Julie Sola, chair elect of the EDC and senior vice president and general manager of Harrah’s North Kansas City, has announced that the EDC received a grant from Caesars Foundation for $5,000 which will purchase 25 beds. Thrivent will provide hot dogs, chips and drinks for all volunteers.
Each bed from start to finish cost $400 for bunk bed and $200 for a single. This includes the cost of materials, mattresses, and bedding. You can also donate to SHP. This allows you to sponsor all or part or a child’s new bed. Whether you purchase one bunk bed or twin sets of sheets, your sponsorship will help SHP deliver new beds to children in need.
On May 1, volunteers are asked to dress appropriately for the dusty work. Closed-toed shoes are required. Each volunteer is required to fill out an indemnification release form and children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.
All tools and materials will be provided, including eye protection, hearing protection, dust masks and disposable gloves so !here is no need to bring anything.
Bed Build Day will be located on the Liberty Square, on Main Street, between Mississippi and Franklin Streets. If you are interested in being a corporate sponsor, please call the EDC at 816-468-4989 or e-mail info@clayedc.com. To volunteer or donate, visit this link.
