Dawn Cramer, Vice President of Cramer Capital Management and a member of your EDC, was unanimously approved by the Missouri Senate as a member of the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners on February 1st. The vote confirmed the nomination from Governor Mike Parson. The Kansas City Police Board consists of the Kansas City Mayor and four gubernatorial appointments.
Your EDC’s partner, William Jewell College is inviting the public to look at the stars. Maggie Sherer, PH.D., Professor of Physics and Chair of the Department of Physics, is planning to have an open house at the Pillsbury Observatory on the first Friday night each month through May. The first open house is this Friday, February 4, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm, if the sky is clear, at the Pillsbury Observatory. The Jewell community and the public are invited to come up to the observatory during that time to observe the Orion Nebula through the 14-inch telescope.
Kyana Bowers of EDCKC has grant funds available to invest in promising social entrepreneurs with sustainable business models that create social, racial, and/or environmental change. The application deadline is March 30, 2022. For more information click here.

Metropolitan Community College Kansas City has a speakers’ series this month. On February 9th at 6:00PM Lyle Gibson will present on the History of Laws and its Impact on African Americans. On the 16th at 6:00 Dr. Warren Haynes will host Courageous Conversions and on the 23rd at 6:00 Dr. Crystal Johnson presents 2 Steps Forward 2 Steps Back: Historical Amnesia’s Impact on Social Progress.

Rich Groves, the Executive Director of the North Kanas City Business Council, became certified to facilitate the Jon Schallert Destination Creation training course. The Destination Creation class runs February 14, 21, 28 and March 7, 14 and 21 for 2 hours each from 3 to 5 p.m. It will be ideally set up for hybrid training using the North Kansas City Fire Department training room which can hold up to 28 participants and a newly acquired Owl Pro camera/microphone. A “destination” business isn’t limited to customers within a small geographic region. People will travel from far away for a destination business that has unique appeal. Internet traffic, too, will rise when searchers discover something unique and special about a destination business. The Caesars Foundation of Harrah’s is now taking applications for donations. You can get more information here. You may remember that your EDC received a $5,000 grant towards our project with Sleep in Heavenly Peace where we built 50 beds and finished 30 others earlier this year. As our Chair Julie Sola pointed out at our Annual Meeting, there are 80 less kids sleeping on the floor right here in the Northland than there were a year ago.
Our Mid-Continent Public Libraries offer many classes including the Square One courses on how to operate a business. The website offers many opportunities, both virtual and in-person.
