EDC member Northpoint Development plans to build an apartment community near its new headquarters on North Oak Trafficway.
While apartment development is notable, this location grabs interest for several reasons. Northpoint purchased the former Cerner Oaks Campus at 3315 North Oak Trafficway in 2021. Since then, it has undergone a significant renovation that includes modern office facilities and amenities such as spa and game areas.
In late March of this year, Northpoint followed that investment with plans for a 342-unit apartment community on just under 20 acres between Cherry and Holmes. The property is located on a wooded lot east of the headquarters. The location is in Kansas City, just north of its border with North Kansas City.
Named Ascent Apartments, the development calls for four, four-story buildings. During presentations to city leaders, Northpoint officials said they consider the effort an extension of their headquarters’ effort where they have invested $30 million. The location currently employs over 300 staff members but has the capacity for 1,000.
The apartments are planned with a total of almost 560 surface and garage parking spaces. There’s also planning for an amenity deck, pool and dog run. NorthPoint said it will repave Holmes Street adjacent to the apartments and add storm sewer drainage and a sidewalk.
The EDC submitted testimony in favor of NorthPoint’s apartment plan in February. “Their latest project will add much needed density to the North Oak corridor where the Mid-America Regional Council just invested $5,520,000 into a $6.9 million reconstruction project from 42nd Street to Vision Road,” Executive Director David Slater wrote to council members. “The re-creation of this Kansas City gateway from North Kansas City has been a vision of Northland leaders for a long time. This project helps bring the vision into reality.”
