Liberty, especially its history, was on the air recently when station 98.1FM KMBZ ran its 2023 City Spotlight series last month with a spotlight on the Clay County community.
Aiming to “Tell the Liberty Story,” KMBZ chose Liberty as its first entry to the 2023 series of features on local communities, with business, government and educational leaders who are making an impact in the community
The accompanying article by Dan Winbaum of KMBZ highlights the city’s history, which began around 1820 – a generation before Kansas City’s founding.
The saga doesn’t avoid the community’s darker side, either. With many original settlers from Kentucky, Tennessee and other southern states, Liberty became part of Missouri’s Little Dixie. Many residents were active in the Border War between Missouri and Kansas. The bad blood and resulting bloodshed lasted from the mid-1850s until well after the Civil War – in many ways not ending until the death of Jesse James in 1882.
