Cedar Fair, owner of Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun, and Six Flags are merging to create an expansive amusement park organization with operations spread across 17 U.S. states and three countries. The combined operation, worth more than $3.5 billion, will boast 27 amusement parks, 15 water parks and resort operations in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
The Cedar Fair and Six Flags boards of directors have unanimously approved the merger agreement. Officials of the two companies cite the need for a stable and diverse company to thrive in today’s economy.
The merged company will operate with the Six Flags name, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. The move is seen as creating a large organization to better compete with larger rivals like The Walt Disney Co. and SeaWorld.
