Northland CAPS Students Plan Cerner HQ Repurposing

Five students in the Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies (Northland CAPS) have completed a semester-long project to design future uses for Cerner’s former World Headquarters in North Kansas City.

Starting in September, the students researched possible development strategies to revitalize the 100-acre site left without an occupant following the purchase of Cerner by Oracle. Buildings at the location total more than 1.5 million square feet.

The Northland high school students included Brenden Crutchfield, Molly Toohig, Luke Meredith, Delaney Harbrucker and William Sanchez. They presented their ideas at a North Kansas City Council meeting in December. They had worked with the council to develop concepts for the area after meeting with officials from nearby North Kansas City Hospital and a reporter from the Kansas City Business Journal.

The students identified two major possibilities for reuse of the facility, a “mini-community” with various mixed uses, including the hospital, or a college campus that would support an institution new to the region or an expansion of an existing college or university.

Although the scope of this CAPS’ project is unusual, working with businesses on special projects is not. Each year, these area high school students are paired with local businesses to provide some focused help while they learn business skills and explore careers. North Kansas City Business Council Executive Director Rich Groves suggested the Cerner project.
