Clay County Economic Development Council’s

Friday Facts

By David Slater, Executive Director

Baldridge Best: Each year the Baldridge Foundation recognizes excellence in several categories on a national level. With a tip from The Excelsior Citizen, we are pleased to let you know that Excelsior Springs City Manager Molly McMcGovern received a Leadership Award under the Community Category. Also honored was Kimberly A. Halfhill, Founder, KH Consulting and Associate and Faculty Member, Communities of Excellence 2026.

Riverside Rocks: Your EDC sends a huge shoutout to Riverside Mayor Kathy Rose and her team for landing a 15,000-seat amphitheater in partnership with Live Nation. While the 587 Plan includes an expansion of the amphitheater at Hodge Park we will continue to wait for Kansas City to make appointments to their Tax Increment Finance committee that are required based on our charter form of government passed by the voters in November 2020.

MoDOT Funding: A couple of weeks ago we reached out to the area MoDOT Commissioners about funding for the split. They returned a very nice letter explaining their reasoning for not targeting the number one project in the Northland. While it is OK to disagree with the decision it is also very important to respect it. The area MoDOT Commissioners Warren Erdman, Executive Advisor Strategic Plans for Canadian Pacific-Kansas City Southern and Dan Hegeman, former State Senator and Chair of the Appropriations Committee along with MoDOT Director Patrick McKenna worked closely with me when I was president of Missouri Mayors United to fund infrastructure projects and are all very successful because they are both smart and driven. The letter reiterated the importance of getting the Mid-America Regional Council’s top project, I-70 between I-470 and I-435 funded. Our Northland Legislators are working on the funding through the Appropriation Committees.

Kisker CAPS Career: After four and a half years as the Executive Director for the Northland Center for Advance Professional StudiesBrett Kisker, has taken a position where he will be leading work on a partnership between Make48 and the DeBruce FoundationTJ Goeglein, who has been with N-CAPS for two years will serve as the Interim Director during the leadership search process. Your EDC wishes Brett the best and appreciates his efforts.

Literary Love: Our friends at the Mid-Continent Public Library are sponsoring a winter reading challenge January 15th through March 15th. The goal is to read five books in this period. While the project suggests celebrating romance in bloom as the theme, any books will do. For more information click here.

Clay County Comprehensive Plan: Do you have a vision for our County? The Comprehensive Plan is a long-range document that guides the County’s future growth and development, its priorities and its services. It is a road map of sorts that helps us visualize where we want to go as a county and the path to reach that destination. You can give your input by clicking here.

Puzzles For Inmates: Busy inmates are safe inmates, which is why the Clay County Sheriff’s Office is collecting card games and jigsaw puzzles for the Detention Center throughout the month of January. “The community responded so overwhelmingly to the first-ever paperback book and puzzle drive we did for the jail in January 2022, that when new needs arose, we decided to ask them for help again,” Sheriff Will Akin said.  Items can be dropped off any time in the Sheriff’s Office lobby at 12 S. Water Street, Liberty, Mo., through Jan. 31. Any organization or business that also would like to serve as a drop-off location can contact them.
