Friday Facts

By David Slater, Executive Director

It’s All of UsFrom Olathe to Kearney we celebrated our Chiefs’ Championship and landing the 2026 World Cup. We are Kansas City. The tragedy at the parade was all of us too. The murder of Lisa Lopez-Galvan was horrific and made worldwide news. She was the fourth murder victim in Kansas City this week, the others not getting past local news that has numbed us to the point where we just wait for the next story. What we witnessed Wednesday in our 2.2-million-person Metro is all too common in certain zip codes. We have to get better. The world does not see us as individual zip codes, cities or counties, but Kansas City. If early information is correct, two of the shooters were teens and a 60-inch semiautomatic weapon was recovered. The child carrying that gun did nothing illegal until he pulled the trigger. Think about that for a minute. A huge thank you to all of our first responders. Your ability to run towards danger while others run from it is a trait not many of us have. 22 other victims, half under 16, are alive because of you and the doctors and nurses just doing what you do.

3-Peat? In the 58-year history of the Super Bowl there has never been a 3-Peat. Only one team has that shot next year. Until this year, no quarterback had ever started more than three Super Bowls before age 30…Patrick Mahomes is 28. Five Chiefs have played in all six of their consecutive AFC Championship games…Mahomes and Travis Kelce on offense, Chris Jones on defense and specialists Harrison Butker and James Winchester.

Director Wanted: Midwest Small Business Finance, the lending arm of your EDC, is looking for a Director that has experience in Corporate Governance. Corporate Governance refers to strategic operations of a corporation which differs from day-to-day management and operational activities. For example, strategic planning, stakeholder/shareholder communications, talent management, enterprise risk management and board oversight activities for a corporation. You would become a part of a Board that meets quarterly over lunch for about 90 minutes. The SBA requires a Board with diverse backgrounds so you would not have to have experience in lending as those slots are filled with Directors in that area of expertise. Please call us for more information.

Membership Rates: Your EDC Board of Directors voted unanimously to increase our membership rates to bring us more inline with other area EDCs. They also authorized benefits for each level in accordance with our new strategic plan. If you are a current member, you will be invoiced at the current rate. The increase will be for 2025 and new members joining your EDC this year. Here is the new information. If you are a current member you have not received your 2024 membership invoice as we are implementing a new Customer Relationship Management software. Unless requested we will invoice you in the next 60 days. Please call me with any questions or concerns.

Kearney Career Fair: Kearney High School is hosting a Hiring Fair on Wednesday, March 13th, from 12:40-1:55 PM (setup can begin at 12:15). All students in grades 10-12 will rotate through the fair and they are seeking companies who are looking for part-time summer help as well as companies seeking seniors for full-time positions. If interested in attending, please complete the form here. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Stacy at holtzclaws@ksdr1.net if you have any questions.

Coffee Connect: The 1916 in Holland 1916 comes from the year they were founded. Come hear how this over a century old company has nurtured the seeds of change to produce identification branding in both nameplates and now membrane switches, touchscreens and more at this Wednesday’s Coffee Connect. Join us for free coffee and networking at 7:45 AM with the one-hour program beginning at 8AM. This week we will be at Holland 1916 at 1300 Burlington, North Kansas City, MO.
